Hyde Park, Chicago: Redefining the roots of America (working title)
Hyde Park, Chicago: Redefining the roots of America is a glimpse into the quirky integrated neighborhood that was once quiet until Obama’s presence made it the center of the universe. Is Obama’s old neighborhood, Hyde Park, an example of what the rest of America should be like? This film project will listen to the dialog about class and race issues within an integrated community and the surrounding communities.
“If you go one mile north and one mile south of where Obama lives, you will see an amazing stretch of America, along class lines, along race lines, along commercial lines and schools,” states Professor and sociologist Mary Patillo.
This film shares glimpses of integration through the eyes and stories of some residents of Hyde Park and its bordering neighborhoods throughout the course of several years, starting in the fall of 2008 when Obama was named the democratic candidate for the presidency. Many argue that there is still and will continue to be racism in this country. And within Hyde Park there are still struggles with race and class. Do people ignore race or class issues rather than discuss it? Or is it easier to talk about race and class and cultural differences in Hyde Park?
